April 2nd, 2008Back Home
April 1st, 2008We made the 420 drive from Kings Bay to Asheville one day before the rain. Which meant that our first day in Asheville was wet. But not to worry. We put on our rain gear and headed to Hendersonville to explore their Curb Market and wet cute town. Then we drove by Chimney Rock and up to Black Mountain another tourist town and then we made it back to Asheville to the Basilica of St Lawrence for 5 PM mass. Dinner at a downtown Irish Pub then home. Second day was devoted to Biltmore House. It took two more days of driving for the about 800 miles home from Asheville. Rain, Lightning, storms, and high winds were predicted all along out route but we only hit minimal rain and got home before 3 pm today. Will start unloading the trailer tomorrow. Meanwhile from our day in the rain in Asheville.
Eastern Continental Divide. I thought there was only the Continental Divide out west.
The view from Chimney Rock. Just kidding but it would have looked like this if we had gone up.
On the way to Cumberland Island
March 30th, 2008The ferry, the house and the horse
March 29th, 2008From St Mary’s the two of us and John and Nancy took the ferry to Cumberland Island. Nathanael Greene bought land on the island in 1783 and his widow Catherine Greene built a four story tabby home named Dungeness. In 1884 Thomas Carnegie (brother of Andrew)with his wife Lucy began building on the foundation of Dungeness. The island is home to herds of wild horses and is where John Kennedy Jr got married.
The ferry
The house (if I had waited for these people to leave I would have been there all day
The horse. It seems that all of the horses were on the beach that day except the lone ranger below
Thinking back to Amelia Island on a Travel Day
March 28th, 2008Went 415 miles from Kings Bay to Asheville today. Nothing exciting so we will revisit Amelia Island. The Island was named after the daughter of King George (I think). As soon as you cross the bridge to the island there is Barbara Jeans restaurant. Those who had the she crab soup said it was excellent. The shrimp salad sandwiches were great and John seemed to like his grilled cheese sandwich.
Fernandina Beach in the main town on Amelia Island. It is a tourist seaside town crammed with shops most of which have a pirate theme. All the good looking chicks seem to hang out with the bad boys.
